Meet the Archaeologists! 2012

ArchSoc’s Meet the Archaeologists! realised its claim of being the most popular event listed in the About Time: SA History Festival program. Over 80 people braved the cold, wet and windy weather to enjoy a night of archaeological conversation at the Flinders University Victoria Square building.

ArchSoc’s own Antoinette Hennessy performed brilliantly as MC for the night and introduced our presenters:

James Hunter (maritime archaeology).

Heather Burke (historical archaeology).

Jordan Ralph and Rachael Willika (Indigenous archaeology).

Alice Gorman (contemporary/space archaeology).

Claire Smith (world archaeology).

The feedback we received from attendees was more than positive:

  • Thanks to you and your colleagues for an informative and interesting night with the archaeologists. I really enjoyed the presentations and it was good to see so many young people at a History Month function. I go to many talks and lectures, including those presented by Flinders University, and I’m often one of the younger audience members even though I have lived though many historic events. It is great to see young people engaged with archaeology and history, no matter how recent or ancient.
  • Thank you to all of you for a most informative evening. I learnt such a lot about archaeology. I’m afraid my previous knowledge was limited to ‘Time Team’ stuff. Your enthusiasm and the camaraderie between you all and the academics would be the envy of other faculties. Keep up the good work!
  • When do we do it again? (Adam, age 6).

That puts an end to our History Festival and National Archaeology Week campaigns. Both were highly successful and entertaining events.

A very big thank you goes to:

  • History SA for organising the Festival;
  • Emily Jateff, South Australia’s National Archaeology Week co ordinator;
  • the ArchSoc Committee and Members that helped with the running of the night; and
  • each of the presenters and the MC for this great contribution to the Society.

ArchSoc especially wants to thank each and every one of the attendees that came out and supported us. It was you who made the night so successful.

  1. Awesome news to hear it went great. Now I wish I had gone… Any chance of those presentations being re-presented around uni?

  2. Not at this stage, unfortunately we didn’t film it! I’m sure all the presenters will be happy to answer any questions though! Make sure to come to our next one :)
