Master Class – Writing Book Reviews for Publication

On the 14th of November the Flinders University Archaeology Department will be holding the master class titled ‘Writing book reviews for publication: a joint Australian Archaeology and ArchSoc Masterclass’. The master class aims to give students practice in writing book reviews for publication in academic journals. The master class will be held in Humanities room 105 between 9am and 1pm. There is no cost and morning tea will be provided by ArchSoc. Alice Gorman will be teaching this master class and it is a great opportunity to learn from an experienced book review editor. Plus, if the participants write a review for DigIt, they will have their review published a few weeks after the class. This master class is restricted to 20 students and is open to undergraduates and postgraduates. The link below contains more information on the class and is where you can sign up.

Greater protection for GPS units

ArchSoc’s Garmin Rino 650 GPS units will have extra protection thanks to the proceeds of the recent bake sale. This week ArchSoc purchased a customised Pelican Storm Case* (model iM2100) in preparation for lending the equipment out to financial members from 2015. This purchase means that the Rinos will be stored in a watertight, dust proof and shock proof container, therefore ensuring they are not damaged during storage and transport to field work. Speaking from experience, these cases can even be driven over in a fully-laden 4wd without damaging the case or the contents.  To top it off, the case has a lifetime warranty.

The timing of this purchase was great. Next Tuesday the 28th of October, ArchSoc is holding a meeting in HUMN 106 at Flinders University to discuss the future of ArchSoc. Among other things, the storage and borrowing policy and procedure for the Rinos will be drafted (the final policy and procedure will be adopted at the AGM in November). There will be further email updates about the meeting and AGM via email.

On Saturday the 8th of November 10am-2pm, ArchSoc will be holding another demonstration day dedicated to the Garmin Rino units. If you’d like to know more about using these GPS units, from beginning to end, please email ArchSoc President Di Riley to book your spot (places are limited).

Total Station Workshop 13/09/14

On Saturday the 13th of September ArchSoc is holding another Total Station workshop. This workshop will take place in the Social Sciences South courtyard from 10am to 2pm (Flinders University/sign in is at 9:50am). This workshop is for beginners only. The people who attended the first workshop are also welcome to attended this session as a follow up class. A separate rino workshop is being scheduled for October. BYO lunch. Coffee, tea and water and biscuits will be supplied. Rob Koch is our demonstrator.

Total Station and GPS Workshop 23/08/14

This Saturday, the 23rd of August, ArchSoc is holding a Total Station workshop for financial members. The workshop will take place at the Flinders University Campus, Bedford Park starting at 10:00am and finishing at 2:00pm. Lunch will be Pizza and soft drinks, courtesy of ArchSoc after the workshop. There will be coffee and tea available during the morning.

The workshop is restricted to 8-10 people, so be quick and register. Undergraduates are highly encouraged to attend.

This is a unique opportunity to work with experts in their field in a one on one situation​. The workshop will go ahead no matter what the weather. There is no cost to participants as the demonstrators are kindly donating their time and expertise.

Update: Semester 2 2014

It has come to our attention that some people haven’t been receiving our emails. We think we have resolved this issue and have re-added our members’ emails to our list server, and fixed the issue with the member database.

Some of the notices that you might have missed over the last few weeks related to the new issue of ArchSoc’s journal, Dig It (ISSN 1440-2475). For any member who hasn’t received a physical copy, please let us know via email if  you want a copy posted out to you or if you would prefer to collect it yourself.  Just a reminder that only current financial members are eligible to receive a hard copy.

At the moment we have 119 members, which is down from last year by approximately 50 members. Now is the perfect time to join, as we will be holding a number of events, including fieldwork training/practice days, a quiz night and the next issue of Dig It will be published towards the end of the year. Dig it 2014-2: Call for Papers

Dear colleagues,

The editing committee of Dig It is delighted to invite students and recent graduates from all around the world to submit a contribution for consideration in our 2014/2 edition, to appear in December 2014.

Dig It is a student-run, peer-reviewed journal of the Flinders Archaeological Society. The purpose of Dig It is to provide students, from undergrad through to postgrad and recent graduates, with the opportunity to practise and familiarise themselves with writing, publishing, editing and the reviewing process involved in professional publications. In addition, it aims to keep future and starting archaeologists connected and informed about what is happening in the archaeological community.

All contributions are reviewed by the editors and a panel of reviewers; however original research articles and essays additionally undergo a stricter and anonymous peer review process also involving external experts.

We welcome contributions from local, interstate and international undergrad and postgrad students and recent graduates. If you want to contribute a research article or essay to Dig It 2014/2, please send us an abstract of 200 words. For personal opinion pieces, book reviews and thesis abstracts, an informal expression of interest is sufficient (just email the editor).

We especially warmly invite undergrad students to contribute to our next issue. Even if you do not yet have an own research project to write about, you write a review of a new(-ish) book you read recently, or maybe write a short research essay in form of a literature review about a topic that you recently became interested in?

The abstract deadline for original research papers and research essays is 4th August 2014, shortly after which the editing committee of Dig It will inform you about whether or not your contribution will be considered. The deadline for submission of papers will be 4th September, and revision period in October. Abstracts should be emailed to dig.it@flindersarchsoc.org.

National Archaeology Week and ArchSoc

National Archaeology Week is fast approaching and ArchSoc is holding two exciting events this year. These two events are the Meet the Archaeology Students (MTAS) and Meet the Archaeologists Night (MTAN). These events aim at introducing the public to archaeology in Australia, with a specific emphasis on archaeology in South Australia/by South Australian archaeologists.  

MTAS and MTAN will be held on Friday 23rd of May at Room 1, Level 1, Flinders University Victoria Square, 182 Victoria Square, Adelaide. This is a gold coin donation event. There is limited parking available on the street. The closest paid parking areas can be found at 172 Gawler Place, and 80 Flinders Street (enter at Wyatt Street). Drinks and nibbles will be available.

Meet the Archaeology Students will begin at 1pm and will continue until 5:30pm with a half hour break at 3pm. Meet the Archaeologists Night will begin at 6:30pm and will continue until 9pm. The Meet the Archaeologists Night will be scheduled as follows:

Recipients of ArchSoc’s 2013 Awards

ArchSoc announced the recipients of the 2013 awards at the Department of Archaeology’s award ceremony earlier in the year. The recipients of the awards are as follows:

The ArchSoc Andrew Allen-Farr Award

The Andrew Allen-Farr Award is presented annually to the ArchSoc member who made the most outstanding contribution to ArchSoc in the award year and demonstrated the qualities that distinguished Andrew Allen-Farr, namely:

• A positive commitment to archaeology;
• The ability to further the public awareness of archaeology in this state in a friendly and forthright manner
• An outstanding amount of time and effort freely contributed to the Archaeological Society as well as archaeology in general; and
• A commitment to improving the university experience of fellow students.

The recipient of the Andrew Allen-Farr award for 2013 is Dianne Riley.

Dianne has shown an active interest in ArchSoc from 2011, when she first inquired about membership with the Society. She has since proven herself to be an extremely supportive and valuable member of ArchSoc, and as a committee member this year. She is arguably one of the Society’s most active members; willingly volunteering for different events and times when an active work body is needed (which is almost always the case). Consequently this has made her one of the Society’s most reliable members.

Dianne volunteered her time at most, if not all Archaeology Department seminars, including public seminars by shopping for food and drinks to serve to guests AND hanging around to clean up afterwards. This in itself is no mean feat. As mentioned in the introduction, Dianne has volunteered her time to help others organise a great deal of things, including (but not limited to): the policy and constitution subcommittee, organising seminar catering, NAW events, field trip to Belair National Park, ArchSoc’s 21st Birthday Party, most of ArchSoc’s fundraising events, such as bake sales and stalls at O Weeks, Open Days and Club Fair Days.

In archaeology in general, she constantly volunteers and gets involved with field work and research opportunities related to the discipline, including travelling overseas earlier in the year for an ongoing project being conducted in Italy. All the while, she constantly considers ArchSoc and tries to promote the Society positively to colleagues and passers-by.

Dianne has also done a tremendous job as ArchSoc’s membership officer in maintaining the Society’s membership database. ArchSoc’s large, and constantly growing member base requires a large amount of time and effort in ensuring that the records are kept updated and all necessary details are available – these records are not only important for the Society to retain for references (Dig It mailout, statistics, etc.), but also as a requirement for FUSA with whom the Society is affiliated.

Dianne is a caring, positive, proactive, generous and thoughtful person who has given so much of her time and energy to the Society this year. All of the events Dianne has been involved with this year had the aim of improving the university experience for ArchSoc and in saying that, everything that Dianne has done in terms of those events has been in an effort to improve the University experience of students.

The ArchSoc Members Award for Service to the Society

This award is presented to up to three ArchSoc members who demonstrated the greatest contribution to the Society in terms of volunteering, fundraising, advertising or otherwise furthering the objects of ArchSoc during the awarded year.

The recipients of the Members Award for 2013 are Celeste Jordan, Vanessa Sullivan and Tyler Whitmarsh.

The Ruth and Vincent Megaw Award for Outstanding Collaboration in Archaeological Research and Practice

The inaugural Ruth and Vincent Megaw Award for Outstanding Collaboration in Archaeological Research and Practice will be presented prior to the Inaugural Ruth and Vincent Megaw Annual Lecture in Archaeology and Art. Inaugural Ruth and Vincent Megaw Annual Lecture in Archaeology and Art, presented by Brian Fagan

The Ruth and Vincent Megaw Annual Lecture in Archaeology and Art is to honour the lifetime commitments of Emeritus Professor Vincent Megaw and his wife Dr Ruth Megaw to archaeology at Flinders University and to the Flinders University Art Museum. The establishment of the Megaw Lecture builds on the unique niche that the Department of Archaeology holds within Australian archaeology and promotes the unique collections of the Flinders University Art Museum.

Emeritus Professor Vincent Megaw was appointed to Flinders University 1982 as a Lecturer in Visual Arts with a remit to introduce courses in prehistoric and ethnographic art. His accomplishments include five sequential ARC Large/Discovery Grants and devising a new Bachelor of Archaeology degree within a Department of Visual Arts and Archaeology. In 1996 he was appointed to a Personal Chair in Visual Arts and Archaeology. Professor Megaw retired and was appointed Emeritus Professor at Flinders University in December 2002. In 2004 Vincent was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contributions to the study of archaeology and Indigenous art.

Dr Ruth Megaw, who sadly died suddenly in July 2013, spent twenty-five years in collaborative publication with her husband. During their time at Flinders University they developed a joint interest in Indigenous Australian art while continuing to publish widely in the field of early Celtic art. While at Flinders University, Vincent and Ruth Megaw established a major collection of Aboriginal art, especially that from the Western Desert. Though she was never a permanent member of staff in the School of Humanities, Dr Megaw lectured in several topics in archaeology and art. The Ruth and Vincent Megaw Annual Lecture in Archaeology and Art is funded by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law and the School of Humanities and Creative Arts, Flinders University.

Brian Fagan takes a look back at his long career, both as an African archaeologist and as an archaeological writer, and looks at the world of archaeology, past, present, and future.
